Sewing magnets: applications from bags to raincoats
What do you use sew-in magnets for, which size is suitable for which application, and how do you sew them in neatly? From bags and laptop sleeves to raincoats, curtains, and suits.
A sewing magnet is a flat neodymium magnet that you incorporate invisibly into fabric: as a closure, as a holder, or to keep something in place. No buttonhole, no fraying Velcro, no button you have to find. Two magnets facing each other and it closes automatically.
In this article you will read what sewing magnets are used for, which size fits which application and how to insert them neatly.
Which size do you choose?
The larger the magnet, the stronger the closure. Do not automatically choose the largest: in thin fabric you see and feel a large magnet more quickly.
| Size | Fits | Product |
|---|---|---|
| Ø 12 x 2 mm | Clothing, thin fabrics, small cases, costumes | Sewing magnet 12 x 2 mm |
| Ø 18 x 2 mm | Bags, laptop sleeves, jackets, curtains | Sewing magnet 18 x 2 mm |
| Ø 20 x 3 mm | Heavy bags, thick fabrics, outdoor textiles | Sewing magnet 20 x 3 mm |
In doubt? For thick layers of fabric or interfacing, take one size larger: the distance between the magnets costs holding power.
Applications
Bags and clutches
The classic. A magnetic closure in the flap or top edge keeps your bag closed without a zipper or buckle. Work the magnet in between the outer fabric and lining, then you won't see it. Read more about this in closures for bags and laptop sleeves.
Laptop sleeves and cases
A flap that falls closed automatically protects your laptop or tablet better than a loose flap. Keep the magnet at the edge of the flap and not in the middle of the screen or hard drive.
Clothing and jackets
Magnets replace buttons or snaps in vests, jackets and collars. Also handy to keep a hood, collar or lapel in place. In light fabrics Ø 12 mm works best.
Rain and outdoor clothing
For rain jackets and ponchos, a magnetic closure is quick to operate, even with gloves or cold fingers. A magnet in a PVC sleeve is better protected against moisture than a bare magnet.
Adapted clothing
For people who have difficulty with buttons, due to rheumatism, a disability or after surgery, a magnetic closure is a solution. You sew the magnets behind the existing button closure and the buttons remain on as decoration.
Curtains and window decoration
With a magnet in the hem and a second in the tieback you keep a curtain open without a hook. Also handy to keep curtain panels closed against drafts and light.
Cosplay and costumes
Capes, masks and loose parts you click on and off with magnets. This way you can change quickly and the costume remains intact.
Outdoor textiles
Tablecloths, cushion covers and sunshades blow up or away less quickly with a few magnets in the hem. Choose Ø 20 x 3 mm here for extra holding power.
How to sew them in
- Mark the poles. Place two magnets on top of each other and mark a dot on the outside edges with a pen. This way you are sure they attract each other and do not repel each other when they are in the fabric.
- Determine the location. Pin both sides of the closure and check if the magnets are exactly opposite each other.
- Make a pocket. Place the magnet between the outer fabric and lining, or sew a small pocket from remnant fabric.
- Sew around. Stitch around the magnet, not through it. If the magnet is in a sleeve, only pierce the edge of the sleeve.
- Test before finishing. Close and open the closure a few times before sewing the lining shut.
Tip: keep magnets away from the sewing machine foot and pins during sewing. They like to jump towards them.
Washing and maintenance
Our sewing magnets are resistant up to 80 °C. Above that temperature, neodymium permanently loses strength, so the dryer and iron are out of the question.
Wash your textiles with magnets in them in a wash bag and choose a delicate wash program. This way you prevent magnets from tapping against the drum or clicking together through the fabric.
Safe use
Sewing magnets are not suitable for children's clothing and stuffed animals. A loose magnet can be swallowed, and two swallowed magnets can cause serious injury. Also keep them away from pacemakers, bank cards and electronics. Read more in are neodymium magnets dangerous?
